  1. Les McCann’s return to the Montreux Jazz Festival in brought to a close a cycle that began in with Swiss Movement, McCann’s hit live album with Eddie catapocardwabmaililanddemosuppjus.coinfo the release of Layers in he graduated to another plane of electronic discovery. The album documents McCann’s love affair with the ARP synthesizer, a machine with an infinite number of sonic possibilities.
  2. Nov 21,  · Side B of Layers is called Songs from My Childhood, and the “It” in “It Never Stopped in My Home Town” could be his love of music or maybe a train—a very electronic one—rolling and “unrolling” through Lexington, leading him out of town to the wider world. In the magazine: Harmony Holiday in conversation with Les McCann.
  3. Very much like Donald Byrd's Stepping into Tomorrow and Herbie Hancock's Thrust (both from the same time period) this album features the kind of spare production and "breaks" the modern day DJ's are still obsessed over and have more then enough great musical energy, passion and imagination to stand the test of time on their own. Either way 'Layers' is definately one of the major highlites of Les McCann's /5(17).
  4. People have forgotten that Layers was early synththesizer/fusion and everyone was playing with all the new toys. Some efforts just didn't pan out. This one did. It's so good to have the album on CD at last. My vinyl copy gave up the ghost years ago. I have a real good hi-fi now and I /5(17).

  8. This might well be the best album that Les McCann ever cut during the 70s! It's got some killer electric piano riffs, of the sort that are being sampled heavily today by the kids, and which are getting his music to a whole new generation. The tracks have a tight spacey funk sound, and they don't have any of the vocals that (we feel) can often get in the way of some of Les' later works! Loads.
